End of Life Directive

An ELV is any vehicle that has come to the end of its useful life.  The main objectives of the Directive are to try and minimize the amount of waste generated from the ELV disposal process, whilst reducing any adverse environmental impact.

ELV’s are divided into two main categories:~

Natural ELV’s refers to a vehicle that has come to the end of its natural life due to wear and tear (usually vehicles that are over 10 years old).  The category of ELV will usually be de-polluted and then recycled for scrap metal.

Premature ELV’s refers to those vehicles that have come to the end of their natural life for reasons such as accident, fire, flood or vandalism.  Rather than be scrapped, the insurance companies will approve these vehicles to be either dismantled for spare parts only or sold complete as damaged repairable salvage/

Vehicle de-pollution
This is a treatment process that all end-of-life vehicles must undertake if they are to achieve the required levels of materials recycling and recovery stipulated by the ELV Directive.
The process includes:

1. The recovery of all positive components and fluids that can be recycled and re-used (eg, fuels, oils, coolants, ferrous and non-ferrous metal components, etc)
2. The removal of all elements of a vehicle that are potentially harmful to the environment (eg, tyres, mercury switches, airbags, etc).
